Shoreline Story: Paul Stanley

Meet Paul Stanley, Director and Solicitor in the Personal Injury Team at Barker Booth & Eastwood. Continue reading to hear about Paul’s journey into law, how he manages working with clients during a difficult and frustrating time in their lives, and what he wishes more people understood about working in personal injury.

Tell us a bit about you and your role at Barker Booth & Eastwood…

I’m a Solicitor in the Personal Injury team. I work with clients who’ve suffered injuries through no fault of their own, guiding them through what can be a daunting process and securing the support, rehabilitation  and compensation they need.

Did you always want to be a Solicitor? What was your route into law?

Not from the very beginning, but I’ve always been drawn to problem-solving and standing up for people. I studied criminal justice initially. It was through that I started to look at law. I then completed the CPE, LPC, and qualified into litigation. Along the way I realised I enjoyed the contentious areas of law and PI was the right fit.

What attracted you to Personal Injury law in particular?

The human element. Every case involves someone’s life being disrupted in some way. The chance to help is really rewarding.

If you weren’t a Solicitor, what would you be?

Growing up I probably would have said footballer. Realistically think I’d have gone into a research/analyst role — something that still involves strategy, problem-solving, and working closely with people to achieve results.

How do you manage when working with emotional clients or difficult situations?

By listening and understanding first. Clients often feel frustrated and helpless given the situation they find themselves in following an accident. I try to reassure them by explaining the process and giving practical, honest advice. Empathy plus clear guidance is key.

Do you have any standout cases?

Yes — some of the most rewarding work has been picking up cases that other firms closed because they did not consider the claim was strong enough to continue with. With persistence,  thorough preparation and different approach, we have turned claims around and achieved successful outcomes. For clients who were close to giving up these results really do stand out.

Any myths about Personal Injury law you’d like to dispel?

That claims are ‘easy money’ and ambulance chasing.  PI law is detailed, evidence-driven, and often hard-fought. Our client’s ordinarily just want fairness, help and support following an accident.

First impressions of Barker Booth & Eastwood?

Its all good;  really good. The company is supportive and genuinely client focused. I was struck by how approachable and supportive the team is. There’s a genuine sense of collaboration here which creates a positive working culture.

Advice for aspiring lawyers?

Keep going. Stay resilient and don’t be discouraged if the path isn’t straight. Keep building your skills, stay adaptable, and back yourself.

What do you enjoy outside of work?

Time with family, football, and music.
